The Importance of Skin Exfoliation

The skin is composed of three different layers: the hypodermis (bottom), dermis (middle), and epidermis (top). The epidermis is what we see, feel, and can touch which is called the epidermal stratum corneum. It is typically what we think of when we think of skin. The way new skin grows is from the bottom area of the epidermis. It takes one month for the new skin cells to reach the top layer which can be touched.

The human body has ten trillion cells of this six trillion are skin cells. Every hour about thirty-five thousand cells falls off. In one day of twenty-four hours, this number jumps to one million skin cells. This is probably why the chore of dusting seems to be never ending because some of the dust around us is a mixture of dead skin cells. This sounds gruesome but is part of being alive.

We suggest using a warm washcloth applied to the skin to open the skin’s pores in preparation for exfoliation. Beginning with our largest crystal, our cane sugar scrub, applied gently and with circular motions is best to begin to exfoliate off the dead skin cells. It is important to note to make sure especially at this step you are extra gentle while exfoliating because of the size of the large crystals. Next, it is followed by the second step, our sea salt scrub, this medium sized sugar crystal is noticeably smaller than the previous, thus continuing the exfoliation process. The last step of the Three-Step Crystal Exfoliation is our microdermabrasion scrub, the smallest crystal which will polish the skin and leave it ultra-smooth.
